Last summer, I decorated for a backyard BBQ hosted by my Mother-in-law. My Mother-in-law owned an adult family home at the time and she hosted a 4th of July backyard BBQ for the residents and their families. I’m always looking for an opportunity to style a party and I felt honored to decorate for this one!

My vision was to decorate with a rustic look to replicate the time period when the US gained their independence. When decorating the tables, I used a mixture of rustic lanterns, old window frames, and primitive decorations. We kept the decorations simple and used props we had on hand.
Aren’t these lanterns darling? They made the perfect centerpieces to add to the guest tables. Along side the lanterns I placed lovely flower vases. My Mother-in-law had the most beautiful flowers planted at the adult family home and I couldn’t resist picking a few for the BBQ!
It seems like I can’t get away with decorating for party or event without adding a fun DIY project. The night before the BBQ, I whipped up this 4th of July banner out of scraps of fabric and twine.
It was so easy to make. All I did was gather red, white and blue material and cut them into strips of the same length. Then I tied the strips to the twine. The banner looked perfect in front of the food table. Find out how to make a 4th of July ribbon garland yourself on the Ribbon Retreat blog.
During the summer, flowers are in full bloom and they make a pretty decoration to add at your 4th of July BBQ. I took advantage of all the beautiful flowers around the property to accent the tables. We had fun filling this watering can full of flowers too!
4th of July Backyard BBQ Food
Raise your hand if you love to enjoy food that you don’t have to cook! I know I do!
My Mother-in-law and other employees of the adult family home prepared the tasty spread of food! They served hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, fruit, chips, pie and other goodies.
We chose to serve the food on white serving dishes. They are both simple and elegant, and the white tied in well to the 4th of July colors.
If you love easy and fun food ideas, try cutting out Watermelon bits into the shape of a star. Simple details like this can really add extra pizzazz to your BBQ!
Who doesn’t love pie? Pie is so classy plus it makes a delicious treat to serve the guests. The pie table was a separate little nook all on its own. Of course I had to add a rustic lantern and pretty flowers to coordinate the pie table with the rest of the decorations.
If you are planning a 4th of July backyard BBQ, my advice would be to keep it simple. Use decorations you already have on hand and use your creativity!

You did such a great job with the decorations for this party! I’m digging the rustic, antique-y feel of everything, especially the lanterns. And I too REALLY enjoy food I didn’t have to cook myself. 😉 Great post!

I have already pinned this post, but I just wanted to tell you that your decorations are beautiful! I especially loved the centerpieces with the mixed lanterns. That really lent to the charm. I also loved the idea of cutting the watermelon up into stars. I may use that next time I need to take watermelon to a party. Too cute!
