To start out, we read “The Legend of the Candy Cane” book together. To give a preface, the story takes place in a small town in the olden days. A stranger moves in and sets up a candy store. While he is setting up, a young girl stops by to visit.
He shows her the assortment of candies and she is delighted. Then he brings out an unfamiliar treat, the candy cane. He explains how the candy cane represents Jesus! The shop owner and the girl then decide to share about the legend candy cane with the townspeople.
candy store imaginative play!
To set the scene, I styled a kids’ table with candy cane themed decor and a festive candy snack board.
To encourage imaginative play, I set out mini jars and toys that came with the The Legend of the Candy Cane Read and Play box! They had a blast playing “candy store” with all of the toys in the package.
We set up a little “shop” area and my kids played together. Each of them took turns playing the shop owner.
What kid doesn’t love to play with money? They got to use real coins to pay for their purchased items. If you have fake money, that would do the trick too!
Every shop owner needs grocery sacks to give to their customers! My kids enjoyed fill up the cutest red and white bags to give to one another.
share treats with friends!
The Legend of the Cane Cane box came with bags to fill up with goodies and give away to friends! They also came with a “believe” tags and red & white twine (not shown in picture) to use to share about the story of the candy cane!
sensory play time!
Although the Candy Cane Factory Kit would be great for toddlers, any age of kids would enjoy it! The sensory kit came with red scented peppermint rice, sturdy cupcake liners, candy cane tubes and fun glittery decorations.
To set up the sensory play area, I filled Christmas containers with rice! To add a bit of variety, I bought my own white rice as well. My kids enjoyed every second of playing in their sensory bins.
Pouring, scooping and playing.. all fun things that toddlers love to do! I enjoyed watching my kids play in their sensory bins and explore their creativity!
Is it even a party without yummy snacks? I made a candy snack board including candy cane brownies for my kids to enjoy.
If you haven’t made a candy board before, you totally should! It’s so fun to put together. I found most of the candies at the Dollar Tree. The book “The Legend of the Candy Cane” was based in the olden days, so I found candies that I thought would match the time period.
Yummy treats pair so well with hot cocoa. My kids are a huge fan and they always ask for hot cocoa when the weather gets colder!
If you love to bake, you might want to consider making these candy cane brownies!
Candy Cane Brownies Recipe

Scoop the frosting into separate bowls. Mix red food coloring into one bowl and leave the other bowl of frosting white.
Gather 2 piping bags. Cut off the tips of the piping bags to make a small hole or use a piping tip with a tiny round opening. Fill up 2 pipings bags with frosting, one with red and the other with white. Decorate with frosting to resemble a candy cane!
