The Target Dollar Spot has these little buckets with tree branches for sale and they are so stinkin’ cute. I couldn’t help but find a way to make my own DIY version.
All you need to get started are a few simple supplies!
DIY Spooky Tree Branches Supplies:
-Tree Branches
–Black Spray Paint
–Aqua Spray Paint
-2 Black Metal Pails
–Crinkle Cut Paper Shred
-Drop cloth or surface to spray paint on
Select Your Tree Branches
First of all, look around and select the small tree branches from your yard. It’s kind of like a treasure hunt in your back yard.. If you have kids, I’m sure they’d love to help!
I wanted to find the spookiest tree branches and I ended up with Lilac branches. They looked all twisted like a hand reaching out to grab you.
Spray Paint Your Tree Branches
I’m a firm believer that spray paint can make anything look better. First of all, I set up a painting station on my front lawn using a flat piece of plywood. Then I spray painted my tree branches using aqua & black spray paint.
Once the first coats dried, I sprayed a second coat of good measure!
Assemble the Tree Branches
After the paint dried, I filled two black pails with paper shred and I positioned the branches inside the pails. If your pail tips over at all, you could add rocks or something similar to add weight to the bottom.

This is so cute and so easy! I love DIY’s that take such little time! Will be a great idea as well for the upcoming holiday/Christmas season!!
Thanks Lori! Yes you could make these for any holiday for sure!! That makes me start thinking about Christmas now. Thanks for the idea!
Super easy and cute. I think I may have added sand in the pail just for balance. Branches look so spooky don’t they?
Thanks friend! Yes adding sand or rocks is a great idea! Yes, they kinda do look spooky!
What a great idea! And I think that so many times – “hey I could make that!” and never do. Good for you for actually getting it done. I love the black and teal combination.
Thanks so much Bri!! I love this color combo too!
